Dr. Katia Romanoff interprets symbols in dreams and co-writes an advice column with Dr. Lauri Loewenberg called The Dream Zone, appearing in several newspapers around the country and Sedona Magazine.

Below are dozens of Dr Katia's interpretations of dreams, nightmares and waking visions people send in to her. The same symbols appear in paintings, songs, and religions of the world. Just start reading at the top and see if you find any symbols with a message for YOU.

PREGNANT AND MISCARRIAGE DREAM
I had a dream that I was 6 weeks pregnant and I felt like I was 8 months along, especially when I looked down at my belly, but when I looked at my profile in the mirror, I wasn’t as far along and that’s when I realized I was only 6 weeks pregnant. When I went to the bathroom, I looked in my underwear and saw bright red blood. I was stunned, because I felt so great prior to that. I looked in the toilet and saw that I had miscarried. The toilet was flushing quickly, so I reached down to pick up the fetus before the water flushed out. When I looked at the fetus, the baby’s head looked very large and I remember thinking that it looked like a Bobble Head doll. P.S., I’m not pregnant and I’m not planning to have kids.

Jenny, 36, Baltimore, MD

The baby doesn’t represent a literal pregnancy, but something else that you are “creating” in your “oven”. There is a relationship or project you’ve got cookin’ and you felt it was farther along than it really is. You are also afraid of losing the whole project (the miscarriage fear). What are you barely into and afraid of losing? Is there something you were about to give life to that now got snuffed out? Whatever it is, it has an appearance you were not expecting (the Bobble Head doll). It could mean that there are a lot of unknowns regarding this issue, almost a “mystery”. It is definitely something you have never done before, and you have mixed feelings about it.

Jenny's Real Life Story
I’m a single homeowner and I bought my first house last year. I had plans to remodel my kitchen and bathroom along with other home projects and thought my plans were right around the corner so I started to get estimates. In October, my employer closed my facility and I found myself unemployed. I was afraid that I’d lose my house like millions of others, but then 3 weeks later I got a job offer. The job isn’t what I wanted or what I expected and now I find myself disappointed at my job, although it pays more than the last one. This leaves me very frustrated and uncertain about my career direction or lack of one. Although my job is considered mid-level, I find myself starting over at a new company where I need to prove myself yet again before I can move forward. Now I’ve got to put my remodeling plans on hold for several more months to make sure this job works out.

PURE EVIL IN THE FOREST
I have not had this dream in awhile but I get this recurring nightmare. I am in a building/room, that I don’t know how to explain but the rooms are one next to another with just a bed and night table with all the walls closed in except the one at the foot of the bed. The wall that is open is facing an area of the woods, nothing but woods. During the daytime there are people around and everything is fine but when it turns nighttime I am terrified. I feel something watching me and I curl up in a ball and stare into the darkness… waiting for it to come get me. I don’t know what or who it is but it feels like pure evil. I felt as terrified as humanly possible. This feeling follows me around the whole next day after having this dream. It’s horrifying. Tiffany, 20, Rochester, NY

All the rooms in a row with one wall open to the elements represent “cells” in your personality. You probably get this dream whenever you feel trapped or held back in life – or forced to look in a direction you don’t want to go. Something or someone occasionally makes you look into the face of fear. The walls open to the unknown dark forest means you feel open to danger, vulnerable to “attack”. The forest, normally a place of growth, energy and life, represents hidden fears and things that you would rather not come out. The pure evil you sense represents your greatest fear, the scariest thing that could happen. It is raw fear and anxiety. I think you are facing something unknown and still hidden in your life, something you know is coming no matter what you do. The future? What situation or issue is threatening to come out in your life? Is there something requiring you to take action – as in not curl up in a ball – but you feel paralyzed and unable to fix? Next time you get this dream try to talk to “it”, the pure evil, raw fear thing. Tell it that while it may be purely evil, you happen to have pure good on your side (all humanity has access to the Good) and you therefore know full well it is afraid of you. Ironically, it is probably more afraid of you than you are of it, because pure evil runs, flees, from pure good. Let that fact give you confidence to stand up to this unknowable darkness. You are strong, you have the pure light of your own spirit shining blindingly into the eyes of that evil. It is afraid of you and likes to keep you catatonic on the floor. Fear is the weapon it uses to control you. But no more. You are on to it now! You are not afraid of mere fear. Rise up, woman and go forth! And it will have no choice but to leave you alone. Reading Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose would be very helpful to you, I believe, because the author explains what this pure evil really is and how to neutralize it, even disable it utterly with just a switch you can easily flip by "knowing", realizing, recognizing.

The most recent dream I've had is one in which my dog (who died on March 13th this year) was sitting in front of me. I had a bag of treats next to me. It was obvious that she was asking/begging for a treat. I said "you can't eat one, you're dead.", thinking it was impossible for her to consume a treat being that she had passed on. She continued to sit there and give me a look that pleaded with me. So, I finally broke down and tossed a couple of treats on the floor in front of her. I was amazed when I saw she was able to pull the treat closer to her using her front paw and then was able to eat it. I began to wonder if she was going hungry in the afterlife and it made me want to feed her more. Then I woke up.

My name is Tyler (male) and I'm currently engaged and I don't have any children. I am in the process of adopting a golden retriever puppy that was born May 1st and my fiance' worries that this dream may be indicating that I'm not ready for another dog.

Thank you for your time,
Tyler

This dream is actually a healthy part of the grieving process. You are coming to terms with her being gone, yet always "with" you. You are still even able to connect with her, to nurture (feed) her, on the other side -- and like the good dog owner "parent" you were and are, you worry about her nurturance. Very good personality trait of yours coming out in a dream! Your fiance probably knows she is lucky to have a guy who worries about those in his care, in his family. This dream confirms that. It also shows your subconscious mind is finally aware of and accepting the fact that your beloved companion is now gone.  The subconscious mind is the last to accept death of a loved one, be it human, canine or feline. That acceptance means you are finding closure on all levels. The grieving process can take years sometimes in people who are just unable to move beyond the pain, but you are handling it in a nice normal healthy range of months. You might just be ready for that new doggie, after all.

RESPONSE FROM DREAMER:
What Dr. Katia said is very reassuring. The dream I submitted is one of many that I have had since my dog's passing. I think it's because I keep dreaming about my dog that my fiance is concerned that I might not be ready for another one. We knew the time was coming as Lady was 13 years old and her hindend had been giving her problems for at least the past year. When it finally gave out on her, it did come as a bit of a shock. I truly believe that Lady and I will be reunited on the other side some day. Thank you for the analysis and the reassurance.

HEADLESS ZOMBIES
Last night I dreamt I was at a swap meet and they had headless people hanging in the eating area. This one body near my mother and I had partial of his head. There was also a raffle going on. Some lady close to us won the raffle and the hanging body fell and was like in zombie mode and alive. Now I understand that bodies can stay alive due to motor neurons running through our body and since the brain can no longer control it, it is like a chicken without a head that still runs around. But I don't understand. And they were taking kids.   - Nadia

All those dead bodies are parts of YOUR personality that you want to kill off, but want to keep around in case you need them. They have lost their heads...meaning in some area of your life you have gotten too passionate, too emotional, and caused "loss". You want these dead-to-you aspects of yourself to be there in case you need to utilize them, but you also are horrified by the whole self-eating process your mind and emotions are putting you thru. You know the saying, "it's eating you up inside."  Ask yourself what is eating you, eating your head (intelligence, common sense) and what is "taking" the kids, in other words, taking your childhood or childlike happiness. The raffle means you took a gamble on something or some one and now you are not so sure it's gonna work out. It got set up on automatic and you can't stop it. If you can figure out what in your waking life is at the root of this dream, you will suddenly realize the connection and the problem will stop haunting you.

I've been experiencing nightmares since my early teens, even sometimes night terrors where I wake up swinging at the air or pillow and screaming. There's always a common theme of someone or some group chasing me and I can't get away. I panic and I feel out of control and very anxious. I do not take any medications and am a very healthy individual but wonder why the heck I am so anxious in my sleep? I would like to get this solved and sleep in peace. Any insight and help would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,

There is some issue in your past that you have still not gotten closure over, or not resolved. It keeps chasing you and you keep trying to get away from it. You are avoiding (out of fear) facing something, someone or some event from your past, probably dealing with your teen years since that's when the dreams began. It could be earlier, in your childhood, however. The inability to get away in the nightmares may stem from a feeling of helplessness and uselessness in waking life. This nightmare may be triggered any time you feel useless or unable to resist something during the day. What are you avoiding facing? Anything? And what is making you feel out of control in your daily life? It could be something small or something buried in your past, but whenever you feel the slightest bit out of control it triggers this anxiety program in your mental computer. Up comes the program and starts its mission of seek and destroy. It destroys your calm sleep and your normally calm demeanor. There is something you're not able to look at just yet, but very soon will be able to. Self-examine, observe, observe. You will find the unresolved issue and once you do, it will finally have to go away. Just identifying it "solves" it when it comes to nightmares. Another solution is to hold onto the nightmare after it wakes you up and try to go back into it while still awake. There you are, just woke up in a panic, but don't turn on the lights, don't open your eyes, don't get out of bed. Instead go back, find those people that were chasing you...remember what they were like this time. See 'em? Look at them. Picture them stopping the chase and standing there behind you. Now turn yourself around (in your mind's TV screen) and face them. Yes, look squarely at them and speak. Say, "Who are you and why are you following me?!" Now wait. Listen. See what the pursuers "answer" back in your self-guided dream replay. Usually some message will come forth, just see what pops into your head -- what they "say" -- after you ask that question. Demand an answer! If the dreams keep coming night after night and no luck with this post-dream replay method, you can conjure up the dream right before sleep. Then enact the scene described above. Turn, face, confront, demand an answer. For some people the before sleep method works better than the after-awakening from nightmare method. Try one or both -- and let us know how it goes. Good luck, we're here for ya.

Great feedback!! Thank you!!
When I was 12 my mom would let anyone come over and boys were allowed in my room alone. I had sex at 12 and was date raped at 13. I felt unprotected and so ashamed. I also grew up in a home with lots of yelling and my mom would "freak out" under almost any semi-stressful circumstance. You never knew when the next outburst would be. So that explains it more. So what do I need to face is a question I need to answer. To be haunted all these years, literally, is exhausting. I'm frightened to face the past, and my mom, for fear she'll blow up!!! I would like to face this head on and not run anymore. Will try the staying asleep technique and do dream journals and see if there's any success. I've been in therapy on different occasions over this issue with some success, but not full, and currently nightmares are very often. I have a 4 year old, 2 year old, and 9 month old and as you know with children, you can't control anything. I get tense when I feel out of control and have to make a conscious effort to breathe, and just chill. I've had success in my daytime life with being "chill," but have an uneasiness I carry around with me. When I'm around my mom I go on major "chill" mode but inside I want to scream!!! Any further advice would be appreciated. Thanks again!!
